A newly built closeboard fence running along a lawn towards a brick house, with Sussex fields beyond

Fencing and landscaping, built to last.

AJS & Daughter is a father and daughter team putting up fences, hanging gates, laying patios and turning tired gardens round across East Sussex and West Kent. Homes, farms and business premises. One crew, start to finish, and a free quote to begin with.

A tired rear garden with rotten leaning fence panels, cracked slabs and an overgrown lawn
Before
The same garden finished, with new closeboard fencing, a sandstone patio, lawn and planted sleeper beds
After

Same garden. Same view from the back door.

Old panels out and closeboard in. Patio lifted and relaid on a proper base. Ground levelled and turfed. Beds built from oak sleepers and planted up. Keep scrolling to watch it come together.

A father and daughter team, not a franchise.

AJS & Daughter is John Starling and his daughter. Ring or email and you reach the two people who will turn up, do the work and come back if anything ever needs looking at. There is no sales rep and no crew you have never met.

We do fencing and landscaping together because they belong together. A new fence usually means a border to rebuild, a lawn to put right and a patio that was never level. You get one quote for all of it, one team on site, and one number to call.

Our work is spread across the Weald, from the Sussex coast up to the Kent border towns, on everything from a single side gate to a paddock boundary that runs for hundreds of metres.

What is underneath an AJS fence.

Anyone can make a fence look good on the day it goes up. The difference shows in the third winter. These are the parts you cannot see once the boards are on, and they are the parts we refuse to skimp on.

  • 600mmPost depth, concreted in

Posts set at least 600mm into the ground and concreted, so a fence panel takes the wind rather than the post leaning with it.

  • 3Arris rails per bay

Three rails on closeboard, not two, so the boards stay flat and the fence stays straight along its whole run.

  • 1Team, start to finish

The people who quote are the people who build. Nothing gets handed to a crew you have not met.

  • 2Counties covered

East Sussex and West Kent. Close enough that coming back to check on something is never a problem.

  • Pressure-treated timber throughout
  • Gravel boards keep the boards out of the wet
  • Capping rails on every closeboard run
  • Old fencing and spoil cleared away

    How a job runs

Four steps, in this order, every time. You always know what happens next and who is doing it.

    1. 1

      We come out and look

We walk the boundary or the garden with you, measure up and talk through what will work and what will not. That visit costs nothing.

    2. 2

      You get a written quote

Itemised, by email, with the materials named. No pressure and no price that only lasts until we leave the drive.

    3. 3

      We build it

We turn up on the day we agreed, keep the site tidy while we are there and take the old fence, slabs or spoil away with us.

    4. 4

      We walk it with you

Before we pack up, we go round the whole job together. If anything is not right, we put it right before we leave.
