On Page SEO has a significant impact on how search engines read, understand, crawl and rank your website. An unoptimised on-page status may well push you down the order on search engine ranking for your targeted keywords.

Due to all the fundamental technicalities involved in On Page SEO, it’s one area where the novice or the not-so-tech-savvy people might just struggle a bit. Therefore, we are here today to discuss basic On Page SEO techniques to get you going right away.

1. Content

Content, for sure, is the king – and will always be. While optimizing your website or blog for search, you must first ensure that the content of your website is unique, original, fresh and deserving enough to stand a top place in search results.

Good, meaningful content makes your site not just remarkable and valuable, but also worthy of earning incoming links from other websites. While creating content for your website, ensure it is:

  • Original (not plagiarized, spun or loose rephrased)
  • Informative and valuable
  • User-friendly and easy-to-understand – remember, big emotions need not necessarily come from big “ten-dollar” words
  • Engaging
  • Inspires a call to action, i.e. inspires the reader to make an immediate response, such as call or purchase or download, or something
  • Short and crisp – the average page exit rate for any website is just a few seconds, which means a user leaves your page in that much time – and so, you must ensure to keep the content short and to-the-point to transfer your USP to the reader promptly
  • Creates trust and urge to learn more about the related topic

2. Title Tag

The title tag is the second most important element of any On Page SEO foundation. Create a relevant and search-friendly title and insert it in the <head> section of your website’s code. The title tag is visible both in the browser bar and on the search results page of your website.

Here is a page in Google Search Result as shown in below screenshot.

As per the majority of SEO specialists, an ideal title tag can have any one of the following formats:

  • Brand Name | Primary Keyword and Secondary Keyword
  • Primary Keyword | Brand Name | Secondary Keyword
  • Primary Keyword – Secondary Keyword | Brand Name

Beginners, early bloggers, and startups should ideally begin the title tag with their target keyword, while for established brands it is recommended that they start the title tag with their brand name to make an early impression on their visitor.

Recommended Practice Length

Keep your title tag no more than 70 characters long since Google only display that many characters on its search results page.

If your website is based on WordPress you can install a plugin called Yoast SEO which we highly recommend. It gives you full control over all the on-page meta tags.

3. Meta Description

Having understood that the Meta Description of a web page does not directly play a role in its ranking on search engines, you must never really take it lightly. The Meta Description is usually the second thing, placed right below title tag, a human user reads on the search results page.

To create an early positive influence on the user and inspire click-through to your website, you must ensure your Meta Description is appealing and convincing enough. The results snippet script of a search engine displays your keywords in bold while displaying your Meta Description, so ensure you do add your keywords or key phrases in it.

Ideal Length

Google displays only the first 156 characters of your Meta Description on its search results page. While the limit is a bit more on Yahoo and many other search engines, it is recommended that you keep it to no more than 156 characters since, almost always, Google is the main thought for SEOs.

4. URL Structure

Next on our On Page SEO checklist is the URL Structure of your web pages. Just like the title tag and Meta Description, it is recommended you include the keywords and key phrases you want your web page to rank for in its URL.

Google bots fetch information from a URL to understand how related and relevant your web page is to any specific search query. Adding target keywords in the URL helps search engine spiders understand the topic of your website or webpage and rank it on a suitable position in search results.

An example of a good URL can be something like this: www.samsonwebdesign.co.uk/website-design
I define the page content and topic considerably well.

While an unoptimized URL may look like: www.samsonwebdesign.co.uk/pages.php?page=websitedesign-123

This URL provides no information about the content of the page and will, therefore, be left out by Google bots in its search results.

Moreover, creating a good URL is one of the most important On Page SEO techniques as when others link to your page you will see your URL text being used as the anchor text from the linking page.

5. Heading Tags

As with all important elements discussed in this On Page SEO techniques, the use of keywords is important in Heading Tags, too, in order to help search engines understand what your page content is all about and how much it is related to the search query.

It is recommended that you include your primary keyword in the <h1> tag while all secondary keywords can be used in the <h2> and <h3> tag.

6. Image Optimization

The importance of image optimization in on page optimization steps can hardly be ignored. Google Image Search is one of the largest sources of organic traffic on a website, provided images are optimized well for SEO.

Google, even today, is not too advanced to identify image content to good effect and, therefore, it is important for webmasters to help Google understand the content of their pictures by adding relevant keywords to them in the form of Title, Alt Text, and File Name. This way the crawler will understand your images well and will show them up in an appropriate position in search results.

7. Internal Linking of a Website

The internal links are also an important factor on your website and for search engines. You need to add fresh content regularly to stand any chance of ranking high in search and inserting links in the content to your main services (like we just did there!) helps dramatically. These links overall boost your website and improve your SEO strategy.

So this sums up our list of basic On Page SEO techniques. Practice them well to stand a good place in search engine results.
