How hard are they to keep?
The neon tetra is probably the most popular of all aquarium fish, and with good reason. It is reasonably hardy, easy to care for and forgiving of the small mistakes that a newer fishkeeper will inevitably make.
Where do they come from?
Originally the Putumayo river and the streams of Peru in South America. Today nearly every neon tetra offered for sale is captive bred in Hong Kong or China. They are long lived for their size, with a normal life span of around ten years in a settled tank.
How many can I keep?
Neons are a shoaling species. We recommend between six and twenty in an aquarium, because they are at their best when seen in numbers. A group of fifteen in a planted tank is one of the genuinely great sights in the hobby, and a single neon on its own is a shadow of the same fish.
What do you feed them?
Neons are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods. Feed a varied diet of frozen, freeze dried and flake foods, and they will hold their colour far better than on flake alone.
How do you breed them?
Males are slimmer with a straighter blue line along the side. You need a water temperature of 25 degrees, very soft water at pH 5 or lower, and subdued lighting. Eggs are laid over fine leaved plants and hatch within 24 hours. Feed the newly hatched fry on fine live food infusoria or a liquid fry food for the first ten to twelve days, after which they should manage newly hatched brine shrimp.

Peaceful community fish of a similar size. Avoid anything with a mouth big enough to fit a neon in it, which rules out most cichlids and angelfish.
