10 Simple Strategies to Get Your Small Business Noticed by AI Search

More and more people are typing questions into AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews instead of scrolling through a list of search results. If your business isn’t being mentioned by those tools, you’re missing out on a growing chunk of potential customers.

The good news? You don’t need a data science degree to get started. The principles behind AI visibility are much closer to good old-fashioned SEO than most people realise. Here’s what actually works.

1. Write Content That Answers Real Questions

AI tools pull answers from content that directly responds to a question. Think about what your customers ask before they buy, things like “how much does a new kitchen cost in Worthing” or “what’s the best way to find a local plumber.” Then write clear, helpful answers to those questions on your website.

This doesn’t mean stuffing your pages with keywords. It means writing naturally, the way you’d explain something to a customer sitting across from you.

2. Build Genuine Authority in Your Niche

AI systems tend to cite sources they consider authoritative. You build that authority by consistently publishing useful content in your area of expertise, earning mentions from local news sites or trade publications, and getting listed in relevant directories.

A Worthing-based accountant who regularly publishes guides on tax for sole traders is far more likely to be cited than one with a static five-page brochure site.

3. Get More Reviews on the Right Platforms

Reviews are trust signals that AI tools genuinely pay attention to. Focus on collecting reviews across platforms like Google, Trustpilot, and any industry-specific review sites relevant to your sector. The content of those reviews matters too. A review that mentions your specific services, your location, and a real outcome carries more weight than a one-line “great service!”

Ask happy customers to be specific when they leave feedback.

4. Make Your Brand Name Easy to Find and Consistent

AI tools build up a picture of your brand by scanning mentions across the web. If your business name, address, and phone number appear differently on different sites, that creates confusion. Make sure your details are identical everywhere, from your Google Business Profile to your Facebook page to local directory listings.

5. Earn Mentions (Not Just Links)

Traditional SEO focuses heavily on backlinks. AI visibility cares about brand mentions, including ones without a clickable link. When a local blog, a trade magazine, or a news site mentions your business by name in context, that signals to AI systems that you’re a real, trusted entity.

Reach out to local journalists, contribute guest articles, or sponsor community events that generate press coverage. Even small-scale mentions add up over time.

6. Structure Your Website Content Clearly

AI tools parse your website the same way a careful reader would. Use clear headings, short paragraphs, and logical page structures. If you offer multiple services, give each one its own dedicated page with a proper description rather than listing them all in a single paragraph buried on your homepage.

Schema markup (the behind-the-scenes code that labels what your content is about) also helps AI systems understand your pages faster. Your web developer can add this relatively quickly.

7. Use Your Google Business Profile Properly

Your Google Business Profile feeds directly into AI Overviews and other Google-powered tools. Keep it updated, post regular updates, respond to reviews, and fill in every field including your business description, opening hours, and service categories.

This is one of the fastest wins available to any small business and it costs nothing but a bit of time.

8. Publish Content Regularly, Not Just Once

A blog post from four years ago does less work for you than one published last month. AI systems factor in how fresh and active a source is. You don’t need to publish daily, but a consistent rhythm of two or three pieces of genuinely helpful content per month signals that your business is active and engaged.

Topics could include local guides, common customer questions, case studies, or explanations of your process.

9. Be Mentioned Across Different Types of Sources

Variety matters. If all your mentions come from one type of source, say, just your own social media, that doesn’t carry as much weight as being mentioned across a mix of local news sites, industry forums, review platforms, and trade directories. AI tools triangulate your credibility from multiple independent sources.

Think of it as building a reputation in the real world. The more different people mention your name in different contexts, the more believable that reputation becomes.

10. Track Where You’re Being Mentioned

You can’t improve what you can’t measure. Set up Google Alerts for your business name so you know when you’re being mentioned online. Tools like Moz also now offer features specifically designed to track your brand’s presence in AI search results, including how often you’re cited in tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Claude.

Even a basic monthly check of where your name appears helps you spot gaps and opportunities you’d otherwise miss.

Start Small, Stay Consistent

You don’t need to tackle all ten of these at once. Pick two or three that feel most manageable, your Google Business Profile, your review collection process, and one genuinely helpful piece of content each month, and build from there.

AI visibility isn’t a separate discipline from good marketing. It rewards the same things that have always worked: being helpful, being consistent, and building a genuine reputation. The businesses that do those things well are the ones AI tools will keep recommending.
